sep11_610x475 In a related note to my 9/11 remembrance post yesterday, CNet reports on a new iPhone app released by the National September 11 Memorial and Museum. The app serves as a sort of tour guide in your pocket, letting you visit locations near Ground Zero while viewing photos taken at those locations on 9/11/2001. It also includes audio of accounts from people who were there that day, and a timeline of events.

"We understand it takes thousands of people to make history, and we are building a museum that acknowledges that," Jake Barton, of design firm Local Projects, told the Wall Street Journal. Local Projects is the firm that created the app. "This is one thing that digital technology does exceptionally well, and it’s literally something you could not have approached 20 years ago, 50 years ago."

While not an “e-book” in the strictest sense of the word, this app exemplifies the ability of hand-held devices like the iPhone to bring all kinds of media together to help educate. As CNet notes, the app does not try to make this learning “fun” or “enjoyable”, but it does a great job of helping people understand 9/11.
