From an email from Aptara:

The beauty of an eBook is its real-time reflowable text that adjusts for any eReader device, no matter its dimensions. This is thanks to the EPUB format standard which works great for text and small embedded images, but not as well for titles with design-critical layouts such as cookbooks, travel books and childrens’ books.

Apple now supports the creation of a precise, “fixed layout,” for iPads and iPhones that makes it possible to reproduce beautiful, full-page, full-bleed, illustrated titles as eBooks. The process for creating these eBooks is much different than creating a standard EPUB eBook. In fact, it’s almost like typesetting a page on the screen.

Join Cliff Koehler, VP of Production for Andrews McMeel, a New York Times bestselling publisher, as he describes the strategic business decisions and drivers, including cost, that led to production of their cookbooks and children’s books as Fixed Layout iBooks.

Eric Freese, Aptara’s Solutions Architect, will walk the audience through the production process, which manipulates an EPUB file to precisely control the page layout, position images, embed fonts and create two-page spreads with a single image. See pre- and post-conversion samples of Andrews McMeel’s Fixed Layout titles during this one hour, complimentary webcast, moderated by Scott Able,The Content Wrangler.

An open Q&A session will follow the presentations. REGISTER NOW
