Netbooks are dead, long live mini-laptops! It’s how we can describe in a nutshell the evolution of the ultraportable computer market in the past nine months or so, with virtually everyone that’s someone in the business dropping the “netbook” marketing term, but continuing to roll out light, sleek, portable and affordable little notebooks.
The latest product to hit the niche is the Asus Transformer Book T100, though, as you can tell by its moniker, the thing is much more than a conventional, bland-looking laptop. Okay, maybe not much more, but more nevertheless, as it’s both a mini-notebook and tablet.
And the cherry on top is it’s crazy affordable, going for $399 in an Intel Atom Bay Trail configuration with the detachable keyboard included. On the not so bright side, you can only pre-order the T100 at this time, albeit October 18, when the 10-incher is to start shipping, is not that far down the road.
Besides its transforming abilities, functionality, productivity and Bay Trail speed and power savings, the Transformer Book comes with 2 gigs of RAM in tow, a 64 GB SSD, USB 3.0, Wireless connectivity, Bluetooth 4.0 and Intel HD graphics.
Not the hottest spec sheet in town and the 10.1-inch screen is rather meager, boasting a 1,366 x 768 pixels resolution, but I dare you, I double dare you to find a similarly packed and effective product at $400. Oh, and did I mention it runs Windows 8.1? Or that its battery can last up to 11 hours between charges?
