sydney.jpegAccording to The Age only two leading Australian publishers have converted Australian books to digital format: Allen & Unwin with 1,500 titles and Pan Macmillan Australia with 500 titles. The National Library of Australia has digitised only 2,366 books.

This is relevant because Kobo and REDgroup, owner of Borders and Angus & Robertson, is gearing up to enter Australia this year. According to them up to 15% of the Australian market could be digital by 2010.

What the article doesn’t mention is the marvelous Gutenberg Australia, with 2,000 ebooks. I fell in love with Australia after visiting a number of times and Gutenberg’s Australiana collection is just wonderful. Take a look.
