Nook tablet

From Liliputing:

Barnes & Noble introduced its latest NOOK device today. The new NOOK Tablet looks almost exactly like the popular NOOK Color which was released last year — it has the same case design and the same display. But as expected, the new device has a faster processor, more memory, and more storage.

The new tablet will be available next week for $249.

The NOOK Tablet has a 1 GHz dual core processor, 1GB of RAM, and 16GB of storage space. Barnes & Noble is also offering users free cloud-based storage. There’s also an SD card slot for expansion… something that some other book store tablets won’t offer.

The tablet can handle 1080p HD video playback and comes preloaded with Netflix and Hulu apps for viewing videos. Barnes & Noble says the battery should provide up to 9 hours of video playback time, or 11.5 hours of reading time.

Priced at $249.

  1. Do we know anything yet about how much of that memory is reserved for B&N-only products, or whether it’ll be a brick if you don’t have an active credit card on file with B&N? Because while this tablet so far sounds like technologically the best deal, those polices at B&N will keep me from ever being their customer.

  2. I don’t know about the Fire. I don’t have a credit card on file with Amazon for my kindle, though, just a gift card. And you can use the Kindle without having a credit card on file with Amazon by side-loading the books (I use Calibre). I think the only feature that’s blocked on a de-registered Kindle is the Collections feature, and you might be able to get around that by using the Calibre collection manager plugin. I haven’t tried deregistering my kindle and seeing whether that will work or not.

My underrstanding (which could be wrong) is that a deregistered B&N device simply won’t work at all. I don’t know about rooted nooks.

  3. Becca, thanks. I thought you had to have a credit card on file for everything. We’ll see about the Fire. I’m betting with access to the Amazon App store, they’ll require a credit card, but we’ll see if I’m wrong.

I still love my Nook Color (rooted), so I’m excited about the new Tablet. No intention of buying it right now, but maybe in the future, if the Tablet is also rootable. I like the option for the micro SD card, and Amazon leaving that off makes the Fire much less attractive.

I actually don’t know if a rooted Nook Color works if it’s not registered. I haven’t de-registered mine to try it.
