copyrightThe Chartered Institute of Library & Information Professionals (CILIP) has just added its overall endorsement to the new changes to UK copyright law, confirming the overall positive reception of the new rules from library professionals. In a CILIP-hosted briefing on the issue, Annie Mauger, CILIP Chief Executive, said: “The Libraries & Archives Copyright Alliance, supported by CILIP, have worked tirelessly for over twenty years advocating for much-needed reform … The reforms are extremely good news for the library and information profession and all the people that use our services. We will continue to work closely with the Intellectual Property Office and the Minister through the reform process.”

“Our copyright laws have not been significantly updated since 1988 and do not reflect how digital dominates our lives,” said Naomi Korn, Chair of the Libraries & Archives Copyright Alliance. “I welcome the Government’s steps to implement these vital reforms. Digital is the lifeblood of innovation, business, culture and creativity yet for too long the copyright laws have been out of synch with the digital age.”

These positive assessments tend to counter the criticisms elsewhere about the new rules. CILIP has been at loggerheads with the UK government over other issues lately, so it’s good to see them finding one area where they see progress.
