Little by little, the United States of America is becoming like the old Eastern Europe, in terms of civil liberties or lack of them. So I’m happy to see the Washington Post’s new editorial opposing arbitrary searches of laptops and other e-gadgets—including, I would hope, dedicated readers.

My own hunch is that outrageous like the laptop searches are just the tip of the iceberg. In The Solomon Scandals I tell of a tight connection between the IRS and CIA. It’s only a novel. But then again, these days you can never tell for sure.
