Writing short fiction is hard, but done well it can pack a real punch and stay with you for a long time.

There’s a new site, Drablr, that takes short fiction down about as short you can go: exactly 100 words. I’ve seen a few Twitter accounts that feature stories in 140 characters, but I didn’t find them satisfying. With 100 words, though, you can get across an emotion or a twist, if you’re careful.

It’s so new there are currently only 11 authors and 35 stories, so it won’t take you long to read everything on the site. The site, by the way, is clean and easy to navigate; I like that. There’s nothing to take you away from the stories. If you’re a Twitter user, you’ll feel right at home. The interface is reminiscent of it, yet without outright copying.

Drablr

And nope, I don’t know Chris Walker. I just picked his profile because he had the best photo.

I read a few of the stories, and while I’m personally not a huge fan of drabbles, I did appreciate the ones I read. The authors seem to understand the purpose behind the short format: Get across one emotion or situation and get out.

If you’re looking for some really, really quick reads, check ’em out. The only way to sign up now is as a reader, but I suspect that will change as the site takes off.

  1. I LOVE the idea of this. As a writer myself, I know that quick story quips like the ones mentioned here can be a PAIN to write, but they only help you hone your craft.

So I’m digging this. (Me and my Twitter addiction :P)
Gonna hop on over and check it out for sure.

    Thanks for sharing!
