Well, as expected Google has announced the Nexus 7 7″ tablet.  The specs look great and it is far superior to the Kindle Fire.  Since one can run the Kindle app on the machine it is fair to make the direct comparison.

$199 for the 8G version and $249 for the 16G version, including a $25 credit in the Play Store.  Ships in two to three weeks according the the ordering page when I placed my 16G order.

Now let’s see what Amazon comes up with.

Here’s their video:

  1. I don’t know if I would characterize it as “far superior”. I think these devices are really meant to be used for content consumption and I’m not sure that the higher powered hardware is going to do all that much more for reading books, watching video, listening to music and browsing the web. JMHO. Also am not sure that Google Play provides anywhere near as good an end to end user experience as Amazon for finding and acquiring content. (Gawd – that sounds like something that would come out of Bezos). Amazon makes it awful easy to buy stuff and they got a lot of stuff to buy.

Still, competition is good and it will be interesting to see what Amazon comes up. Personally, I would rather see some way to add peripherals such as a keyboard and I think that would up the ante in the devices’ usefulness. Still love the Fire.

  2. Greg, since this is clean Android tablet (none of that lock down from the cell companies or manufacturer that some smartphones/tablets deal with, Motoblur I’m glaring at you!) Google will let you not only install the Amazon apps from the Google app store but with a single checkbox in settings and a download from Amazon’s website you can install the Amazon App Store as well.

I know that they have a Kindle app and Amazon MP3 for regular Android in the Google app store but am not sure if they do Amazon Streaming Video even from the Amazon app store.
