Fire Kids EditionAmazon is running a limited-time special offer that should be of interest to all parents. The 6-inch Fire HD Kids Edition has been discounted from $149.99 to $99.99 – a full 33 percent. The ordinary Fire HD 6, meanwhile, is down from its basic price of $99.99 to $69.99. This seems to be a variation on the Kindle deals promotion that David Rothman covered in March, but this time going into colorful Fire HD territory.

With the Fire HD 6 Kids Edition, you get not only the basic device, but a colorful cover in blue or green designed for kids, default startup in Amazon FreeTime for extra child content safety, and “a year of Amazon FreeTime Unlimited – a hand-curated subscription of over 10,000 kid-friendly books, movies, TV shows, educational apps, and games.” And if the shock-absorbent cover doesn’t do the job of keeping the unit safe, there’s a “2-year worry-free guarantee: if they break it, return it and we’ll replace it for free. No questions asked.” Amazon is also linking the offer to a clutch of accessories, some with discounts, such as the pink Kids Backpack or Car Charger.

Skeptics and cynics might carp at Amazon pushing to lock children in to its platform at the earliest age, but that seems churlish to me. If the offer appeals and you have children to keep occupied, well-read, entertained, and educated, go for it. And if you want a less tightly targeted offer, there’s always the regular Fire HD 6 at its new appealing price. Time to hit Buy, maybe?
