Orders for the 16GB version of the 7-inch Kindle Fire HD for $199 are being accepted by Amazon today. This is the first version of the Kindle Fire HD to ship to customers, and if you happen to be one of the many who pre-ordered the device, you can probably expect it to arrive on your doorstep at some point today.

Although the screen size is the same as the original Kindle Fire, the Kindle Fire HD has a 1280 × 800 pixel display (same as the Nexus 7). It’s built on Android 4.0, is powered by a 1.2Ghz dual-core processor and provides direct access to Amazon’s entire media ecosystem.

The 32GB model and the 8.9-inch models of the Kindle Fire HD will ship on November 20. You can, however, pre-order those tablets now.

If your head is still swimming after all the recent new-device announcements, you might consider checking out this brief but informative Books & Review post, which does of decent job of breaking down all the crucial differences between the Kindle Fire HD, the highly-anticipated iPad Mini and the Nexus 7.

  1. Please remember you have readers of this blog from outside the US. For Canada, for example, the only Kindle of any sort sold is the $89 Kindle plain e-ink. The Touch models, the Paperwhite, the Kindle tablets, special offers models … none are sold in Canada. I believe this is true for almost everywhere else except the US.
