Good news for our readers in Mexico. You can now get books through Google Play, in addition to apps. Slashgear kindly reported on it for those of us who can’t read Spanish. (It was announced yesterday on Google+ Mexico.)

According to Slashgear:

Publishing houses offering content for users in Mexico include Random House Mondadori and Planeta, according to a statement made on the Google Mexico G+ profile. In addition to local titles, international titles are also available, providing access to bestselling novels from overseas.

The article discussed reading on smartphones and tablets, but didn’t mention e-readers, so my first question, having never used Google Play Books, was, can you download books from Google Play to transfer to an e-reader? The answer is “yes,” but it’s not intuitive. So here’s a quick tutorial on how to do it.

Google Play uses Adobe DRM, so you first need Adobe Digital Editions on your computer.

Then you navigate to the “My Books” section of Google Play and select the book you want to download. You’ll see the following screen, where you’ll click on “How to Read.”

After you select “How to Read,” you can scroll down the page until you see “Ereaders and other devices.”

Select the format you want (probably EPUB), and it will open in Adobe Reader. Then you can follow the instructions for your particular reader to load the file.

Note that Google Play books are not readable on a Kindle without going through the extra step of removing DRM and converting to .mobi.

So there. If you’re in Mexico, you can now read books from Google Play. If you’re in the U.S. and wondered how to get Google Play books on your e-reader, now you know.
