LG DisplayThere’s been a lot of news about display developments lately. We’ve had new graphene technology offering flexible screens. We’ve had the promise of high-res paperlike displays readable in sunlight. We’ve had powered paper. We’ve had Apple reportedly prepping OLED technology for iPhones and iPads. Now, one of Apple’s supposed suppliers for that technology, LG, is reportedly going to show off an 18-inch OLED display at this year’s CES that can be rolled into a tube.

LG’s own press release states that it will show “futuristic concept displays that highlight the dynamic forms that OLED can achieve, including the world’s first 30R 18-inch rollable display that can be rolled-up like a newspaper; a 55-inch design concept OLED TV display that is paper-thin since the electric circuits are installed separately; and a matching pair of 65-inch extreme-curve concave/convex OLED displays.” LG also promises many other technologies on show in its private showroom at CES, including large size signage, “a 25-inch “waterfall” curved LCD that fits into car interiors, and a 10.3-inch “Advanced In-Cell Touch” LCD that can respond to the touch of drivers wearing gloves.” And the picture released by LG to go with the announcement certainly looks impressive enough.

With this crescendo of media noise around display technologies, can we actually expect to see some products soon? Readers who remember the Readius will realize we have been here before. However, with this amount of publicity, and LG due to actually … ahem … display at a major tech conference, we could actually be due some rollable and foldable products shortly. And for the ereader market, that may come not a moment too soon.
