image"Marcus, a.k.a ‘w1n5t0n,’ is only seventeen years old, but he figures he already knows how the system works—and how to work the system. Smart, fast, and wise to the ways of the networked world, he has no trouble outwitting his high school’s intrusive but clumsy surveillance systems.

"But his whole world changes when he and his friends find themselves caught in the aftermath of a major terrorist attack on San Francisco."

  1. I read this over the long weekend. It’s quite good. I can’t speak to whether it’s Literature, but I enjoyed it. If there’s any knock, you can tell the story is a vehicle for Doctorow to express his long held beliefs on privacy and security. It’s preachy in spots, has a tinge of the far-fetched, and did not win me over on some of the arguments. Nevertheless I enjoyed it and appreciated hearing the entire argument.

  2. Marcus, that’s interesting last I saw Rainbow’s End was free to download but not free to redistribute. There was a download link but the book was still copyright ‘all rights reserved’. Cory’s books by contrast can be repackaged and re-distributed, which is why he has such has range of supported formats. Where did you see Rainbow’s End? I’d like to check out the current situation.

  3. It’s “Rainbows End” without the ‘, and actually I’m not even sure I have even seen it in e. I bought the hardback when it was released. Come to think of it, it was the last p-book I bought, and maybe it’ll even be the last p-book I’ll ever buy.

    Point taken re the ‘

I bought it in hardback also as soon as it came out – I’d been waiting to see what Vernor would come up with next. He had made a text download available as part of the Hugo process, I cannot recall where but it may be still out there.
