On Friday TeleRead contributor Robert Nagle will be giving a live streaming video presentation about Ebooks, Textbooks and Digital Storytelling . You can view it live or view an archived copy of the talk afterwards. (In addition to the archived video copy, an mp3 podcast of the event will probably be available too).

Time: (Friday May 11, 10am – 11:15AM CST )
How? Go to the Live Webcast URL on the Greater Houston Education Collaboration Events (GHEC) page (Here’s the actual URL on the day of the presentation, but that won’t be live until the day of the event). .

The Internet has arrived; what is happening to books? And reading? Robert Nagle will discuss the latest trends in digital publishing and explore its implications for students and teachers:

  • Is reading really in decline? What do the statistics mean?
  • E-Books vs. Web Pages vs. Print Pages: A Pedagogical Comparison
  • Opportunities and pitfalls of using online textbooks (will they kill the educational textbook market?)
  • Tips, Tools & Techniques for Creating Successful Story Environments Online (along with a quick survey of successful examples)
  • Legal and Social Issues related to Online Storytelling

Robert Nagle has a master’s degree in creative writing and a background in college teaching. After serving as a Peace Corps (in Albania), he worked as a technical writer for Dell Computers and Texas Instruments. He keeps a personal blog about literature, technology and culture; also he writes fiction under various pseudonyms. He tells stories with the Houston Storyteller’s Guild and is close to launching the Personville Story Network (a storytelling podcast featuring Texas storytellers).

The result will be streamed live through VBRICKPRESENTER, a browser-based method for viewing presentations. The video + PPT slides will also be archived at the same URL for later access. (I hope to record an audio only podcast version of it for download).

To access the site, click on the Live Webcast URL on the GHEC page . (You will need to give a login; just use any name). Note: you should either use IE or turn off your popup blocker on Firefox before you login.

To verify that your browser is able to view VBRICK presentation correctly, you might want to try logging on to one of the older archived video presentations. Try for example Chris Duke’s excellent presentation on using Second Life for Education .

In case of technical difficulties, check the TeleRead site for announcements/updates. Occasionally, there are delays in getting started. Listeners to the video presentation can post commments/reactions on the related TeleRead thread. After the talk, lecture notes and URL’s will be posted there as well.
