Bill ThompsonThe London Book Fair has announced the relaunch for LBF 2016 of its technology-focused Monday event, hitherto known as Publishing for Digital Minds, as Quantum: Publishing & So Much More. The LBF 2has also agreed a collaboration with Nielsen that will see it present research on the global publishing industry at Quantum,” in a bid to “deliver a data-driven overview of the global publishing industry and its place in the wider content industries.”

According to the LBF official press release, “new media pioneer Bill Thompson and digital publishing strategist Alison Jones will chair Quantum – bringing together their formidable experience and insight to the programme line-up.”

Orna O’Brien, Conference Manager for the LBF, said: “Publishing is at the heart of a multimedia world where international boundaries are increasingly blurred. With Quantum, visitors to London Book Fair 2016 will get the opportunity to look at what’s happening inside the content industries worldwide. And with Nielsen on board we can be assured of presenting a conference where data underpins every insight.” Jonathan Stolper, Global MD of Nielsen Book, added: “We are delighted to work with London Book Fair to help bring clearer and deeper insights for the global book industry through the Quantum conference programme.”

It may be worth pointing out that Nielsen data on the e-book market has been criticized in the past for inaccurate methodology. And since it operates “in association with the UK Publishers Association,” the LBF may not be the most impartial forum for evaluating the impact of self-publishing. Still, for those who want a Nielsen data-driven conference track, a Nielsen data-driven conference track is what they will get.
