comic-con-logoAh, mobile technology. It’s giving people the power to e-read and consume other media pretty much anywhere—but it’s also giving them the power to record media pretty much anywhere, which is a problem for studios who want to control the distribution of stuff that’s just supposed to be shown to the fans in one particular location. Such as Comic Con.

The Sydney Morning Herald has a fairly long article looking at the issue. Movie studios are complaining that a lot of footage that was intended to be shown just at Comic Con to the fans there has turned up online thanks to shaky fan cell phone camera recordings of the displays at Comic Con. Many of them have, thus, released the high quality footage online, even though they didn’t originally intend to, though others are holding firm.

I tend to agree with the point of view of the article: honestly, what did they expect? The vast majority of fans who can’t get to San Diego to experience all this stuff still want to see what they missed. And when you’ve got that much demand, you’re going to have fans who are at the con scrambling to fill it, for the sake of the egoboo they get when other people watch the stuff they recorded. It’s not as if this is even the first Comic Con to have this kind of leak happen—and it sure won’t be the last.

Comic Con is going to leak. Deal with it.
