Morning Links — More on the Mythical Hydra Beast

The Guardian piece on top authors looking to challenge the rules of fiction is a great example of the kinds of thinking that will be needed to fully master the evolving digital palette. I clearly remember the difficulties involved in making the transition from an online Bulletin Board System (BBS) to the web via Mosaic, the first web browser. My grad students and I had been exclusively focused on monochrome, un-resizeable words that had no definable font face, size or style. There were also no pictures, still or otherwise. The WWW thrust us into a new world where these things were actually available to us. How could we use this stuff as an important part of the story as opposed to mere decoration? It was hard and messy but we eventually managed to achieve our goal to a reasonable degree.
