On this evening June 5, I attended a reception by the French Cultural Attaché (at an old 5th Avenue mansion shown above) for the unveiling of a new iBook on the French Impressionists. The book is published by Hugh L. Levin owner of Artepublishing.  The demo was very impressive.  It uses interactivity, but not in a way that overpowers the reader.  The interactivity is part and parcel of drawing the reader through the text and does not interfere with the text flow.

Here is a précis of the presentation:  Great Impressionist and Post-Impressionist Paintings from Musee d’Orsay by Charles Stuckey.  Stuckey, is one of the world’s foremost scholars on Impressionists and  Curator of the French Art at the National Gallery of Art in Washington. He not only wrote the text and contributed audio commentaries embedded into the book.

The pictures are presented in great detail and one can pinch and zoom to get great looks at them.  26 artists and about 200 pictures.  For each major painting there is an audio commentary by Stuckey.  Audio commentary is not just a recitation of the text but contains different material and totals about 3 housr.  Full set of definitions for terms are included and if not the reader will presented with a Wikipedia link.  Each picture has curated links – about 500 in total – to other websites, articles and books. .
