breetanner Stephenie Meyer has released a Twilight novella, The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner, as a free-to-read-online e-book that will be available until July 5th. The book can only be read on-line, not downloaded to a computer or e-book reader; a Kindle version is being sold by Amazon (and an iBooks version by Apple) for $9.99 (though the physical book is only $7.54) where it is currently #4 on the paid bestseller list.

I’ve complained vociferously in the past about free e-books that aren’t really free, and this just seems to be more of the same. It doesn’t even seem to be a particularly good book for introducing new readers to the Twilight mythos, given that it tells the story of an ill-fated character who barely appears in the main novels. Still, if existing Twilight fans can bring themselves to read an e-book on-line, I’m sure they’ll appreciate the chance to do so for free.
