If you doubt the need for a library-oriented search engine, consider the increasing talk of a pay-per-view approach. Just what we need–a Net full of toll gates. Will Google not only work with paid content providers but also charge for searches? I’m not saying all content has to be free–I fully suport the idea of e-bookstores. But if the Net goes the p-p-v route to an excessive extent, it might not be the best news for low-income people and K-12.
