Open Uni Writing what you knowAs many will know, the Open University is the UK’s leading provider of distance learning at college level, which exists to “promote educational opportunity and social justice by providing high-quality university education to all who wish to realise their ambitions and fulfil their potential.” And, as the OU site states, “every day, millions of people access free OU content, no matter where they live in the world. All they need is an internet connection.” The site includes links to YouTube resources as well as archives of research publications, but it just so happens that they also publish ebooks via Amazon that offer some very helpful how-to guides for writers – and those are available as free Kindle ebooks.

Right now, as well as sundry cookbooks and language guides, the free titles on offer include Writing what you know, English grammar in context, Essay and report writing skills, and Start writing fiction. I’m not suggesting that they’re the last words in their respective topics, and many more experienced writers may dismiss them entirely, but they do come backed by one of the most respected institutions of further learning in the UK, if not the world – and they’re free. So what have you got to lose?

There are working links for the OU titles on Amazon US, UK, and Canada. I downloaded all four. Why don’t you?
