Sony prs t1

From Good E-Reader.  I notice that the same model is selling on Amazon for $132:

Is Sony getting out of the e-reader game and going exclusively with tablets? That seems to be whats happening with the company with their only e-reader to be marketed for the last six months now on clearance at Best Buy. You can now walk into most Best Buy retail stores in the USA and get the Sony PRS-T1 for as low as $99.99. A few store managers have told us that the stores have no intentions of ordering anymore.

This is the only time in Sony’s history since they have been making e-readers that they only had one they were actively marketing. During the last few years they were peddling three different models in varying screen sizes.

  1. I’d like to see Sony spend more time fixing their ebookstore, their Android app and bring out an iOS app in order to make them competitive with Amazon and Apple. As it stands their store and Android app are “useless”.

  2. Well, you might be right but I am not so sure. In my opinion it made sense for Sony to cull their eReader line up. The T1 is a good reader and now a prospective buyer does not need to figure out which Sony Reader to buy. It is a simple decision.

The Nook Simple Touch, low-end Kindle, and Sony T1 are similarly priced and a buyer can choose based on merit and their personal needs/desires. My wife bought a Simple-Touch on my recommendation, based on what she wanted from an eReader. I bought the T1 because it suited my requirements best. I bought my first eReader in 1998 so have followed their development closely.

I don’t know what signals merchants are getting from Sony, but Sony itself has periodically dropped the price on their web site to $99. If there is no announcement of a new eInk reader by the end of the summer your speculations are probably correct.
