Back in 2008, I mentioned a new keyboarding method for mobile phones, called Swype, that was under development. It would allow users to enter words by sliding their fingers across the screen from letter to letter, rather than have to take the extra time to tap, tap, tap.

Since then, Swype has been further developed for the Android operating system, and it has been in closed beta for the last few months. However, Read Write Web reports that Swype will be opening its beta for a limited time to allow new users to download and use the app.

It will be interesting to see how Swype works out. It would be nice to see it come to the iPhone, too, but perhaps Apple will come up with its own method of streamlining thumb typing.
