Welcome to a new TeleRead feature—Tutorial Tuesday! Every week, we’ll post a quick little how-to for all you eBook fans out there. Want to learn where to get new content? How to get it onto your reader? How to optimize your reading experience, no matter which app or device you are using? Tutorial Tuesday to the rescue!
For this first instalment, I am going to show you how to return a Kindle Unlimited book. When I first joined Amazon’s monthly subscription service, this was one task I found surprisingly unintuitive. I remember finishing my first KU and tapping all over creation, trying to get the darned thing returned. It wasn’t until I hit the ten-book limit that my Kindle actually offered me a prompt. on-device, to return one.
The trick? You have to do it from the store, not from the book. Here is how to do it:
1) On a Tablet or Desktop
1. Navigate in your web browser to the Kindle store
2. Go up to the top of the screen, where it says ‘your account’ and select it
3. From the pop-up options, select ‘manage your content and devices’
4. If Amazon prompts you to sign in with your password again, do so
You will now see a list of all of your content: books, personal documents and so on. The ones from Kindle Unlimited will be marked with a little banner. Click on it and a pop-up will prompt you to deliver the book, return it and perform other basic tasks.
2) On a Kindle e-Ink Device
1. Open up the store
2. Select the ‘all categories’ prompt
3. Click through to the ‘Kindle Unlimited’ category
This will take you to a landing page where one of the options will be to see all your books. From there, you can return them.
It would have been easier if Amazon had integrated the return function into the context menu for the book—I know when I read a sample, I can tap and get a context menu to buy the book, leave a review and so on. Why can’t ‘return this book’ be an option for Kindle Unlimited borrows?
In the meantime, if you were as confused as I was, I hope this clears the way. Happy reading!
This applies for the prime lending library as well. Otherwise you have to wait for the prompt when you try to check the next book out.
Works for early returns of public library borrows too.
