From the press release:

txtr are to provide eReading solutions and a versatile eBook catalogue for Toshiba’s tablets and PC devices in Europe. From the end of this month, the txtr eBook platform and content will be connected to Toshiba’s  European digital media platform, Toshiba Places. Users will be able to easily download the new txtr “Toshiba Places edition” AndroidTM app on all AndroidTM powered tablets. The txtr eReading app is fully optimised for AndroidTM 3.0 (Honeycomb). eBook content from txtr will also be available in the Toshiba Places portal preloaded on all PC devices in Europe.

txtr, a fully independent company backed by 3M, has the largest catalogue of commercially available multi-language eBook titles across Europe and has a proven technology infrastructure. The company operates its eReading platform with apps and local eBook catalogues via digital distribution and carries out invoicing in local currencies in numerous countries around the world. In addition to a catalogue of more than 400,000 titles to purchase, txtr will give Toshiba Places users access to more than two million free titles.

Thomas Leliveld, Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) of txtr said: “txtr was able to offer all elements of an eReading solution to Toshiba and have it up and running across Europe in only a couple of months. Providing marketing support and platform management on a local basis is one thing; managing the territorial rights, invoicing and the IT required on a multi-country basis is a different ball game. Our catalogue is structured completely in line with local rights and we cooperate closely with local and international publishers.”

The local eBook service from Toshiba and txtr will be launched in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Belgium and The Netherlands. A generic international version of the service will be available in the rest of Europe.

European growth figures for eReading impressive

Europe is still behind the US with respect to the average eBook penetration, but the gap is narrowing with growth figures of over 200% per year* in countries such as Germany and The Netherlands. “There is a huge opportunity in eBooks, which is starting to become a more mature market. We expect it to grow to US$ 35 billion in 2015 globally,” says Ulrik Deichsel, Head of Business Development of txtr.

“We are pleased that the European arm of Toshiba, a world-leader in technology, has recognised the significant changes in the eBook environment and has chosen txtr as their partner of choice in Europe for eBooks,” adds Ulrik Deichsel.  “And it’s important to note that recent research shows that consumers are willing to pay a reasonable price for eBooks. Now is the time to focus on the book discovery process with expected innovations in social reading and recommendations and the quality and size of our local catalogues,” concludes Ulrik.
