typewriter artCalifornia seems to be the main reservation for that endangered species, the typewriter, these days. First we have Beverly Hills’ last typewriter repairman and the diehard cult of the slow writers. And now we have Jeremy Mayer, a typewriter sculptor in Oakland, Calif., eviscerating typewriters and weaving their guts into wonderful busts, nudes, deer, damselflies—and birds on the wing.

typewriter art“I disassemble typewriters and then reassemble them into full-scale, anatomically correct human figures,” explains Mayer on his website.

“I do not solder, weld, or glue these assemblages together—the process is entirely cold assembly. I do not introduce any part to the assemblage that did not come from a typewriter.”

Mayer is the accepted master of this unique art. And his latest series, perhaps the most elegant, is sculpture of swallows, with moving wings.

For a supposedly dead technology, the typewriter seems to be developing quite an afterlife. Try doing any of this with a WP.
