mossberg Technology reviewer Walter Mossberg has posted a column on his All Things Digital blog comparing the three major e-book reading apps for the iPad: iBooks, Kindle Reader, and Nook. Mossberg says that he greatly prefers the iPad to dedicated e-readers such as the Kindle for its big, bright screen and greater versatility.

The column features a decent basic rundown of each app, covering their strengths and weakness in features, available books, prices, readability, and so forth. He noted that while all three worked well for the most part, the Nook app did have a number of flaws and limitations, even though it also offered more visual effects than the others and was the only one yet to offer periodicals.

Though there isn’t a lot that’s new in this article, I found it interesting to see Mossberg’s opinion of the three readers. It would have been nice to know how he feels the other, lesser-known apps such as Stanza and eReader stack up, though.

  1. “Still, the eye-comforting appeal of e-ink display over backlight is not mentioned.”

How does eInk come into play in a review for iPad apps?

Many people find it more comfortable to read on a tablet/slate than an eInk device (especially pre-Pearl). I tend to prefer eInk myself, but that’s not the case for everybody.
