image For those of you experiencing storms in Europe and the USA—yes it can get worse.

It’s been a real scorcher here in Adelaide, Australia (click on Adelaide photo for a more detailed view).  And what do you do in this situation?  Those of you from from colder climates always think “beaches”; wrong.  The third=degree burns from the sun and hot sand are lethal.  We lock ourselves in our houses (in my case a solidly built old house with very high ceiling and air-conditioning) and sit it out.  And read, and read, and read!

Cold comfort in book title

Having dipped into everything from a history of philosophy to Cold Comfort Farm (the word “cold” was the attraction) over the last two weeks, written up translations of Euripides and finally started in on that book on Arabic grammar I am beginning to wonder if this might be a Good Thing.

I can’t do any housework, the garden is already dead;  suddenly freed from day to day routine and the things Outside I am starting to understand the attractions of life in a hermitage.  And why it is always a good idea to have a very large P or E book library at home.

Antarctic duty ahead?

Next summer I am thinking of volunteering for a tour of duty in Antarctica, I’ll still need the e-book collections, but the weather is a lot better.
