Weirdbook Magazine, one of the more celebrated and imaginative titles of the science fiction New Wave and modern-day resurrection of weird fiction, is now relaunching, with what claims to be Issue #31 – albeit after a very long hiatus. As explained in Michael Ashley’s Gateways to Forever: The Story of the Science-fiction Magazines from 1970 to 1980, Weirdbook Magazine first appeared in 1968, and “as a rare market for new weird fiction, it attracted pieces from new writers.” Co-founder W. Paul Ganley “sustained Weirdbook for a remarkable 30 years, winning two World Fantasy Awards for his efforts.”

Paul Ganley is still on the strength at the newly revitalized Weirdbook as Editor Emeritus, along with Senior Editor & Publisher David A. Riley and Fiction/Managing Editor Douglas Draa. The magazine has already declared itself open to submissions until April 30th, with all but dogmatic Cthulhu Mythos scribes invited to contribute. “We are looking for original (no reprints) well-written weird stories. Our tastes are broad and we are looking for any of the following: fantasy, dark fantasy, sword and sorcery, ghost, horror, heroic fantasy, science fantasy or just plain odd.”

So writers out there are welcome to help take part in the rebirth of this great venue – and even get paid for it. As for everyone else in the SF/fantasy/weird community, this one definitely bears watching, and could be on track to deliver more great things in future.
