image The old Kindle font hacks no longer work with the new software upgrade.

But already a new font hack can make the letters more readable on the Kindle 2, 2i and DX. See the hack in the screenshot to the left. More hacks on the way?

“It’s like the Georgia hack,” says edge 777, a commenter on MobileRead, discussing the just-released hack, “but the font is a bit narrower, darker and larger, and Bold doesn’t pop as much…

“I personally prefer the other one, but personal tastes are great (which is why Amazon should really allow this option natively!!!) Enjoy.”

Directions:

1. Go to this MobileRead page and download the ZIP file from edge 777.

2. Extract the upgrade file for your particular Kindle model and copy it over to the main directory of your e-reader after hooking up the USB cable. Don’t put it within one of the Kindle folders such as /documents, in other words. Unplug the cable when you’re done.

3. On your Kindle, press the Home, then Menu and select Settings. Hit the center of the joystick, just under Menu, to indicate your choice.

4. Press Menu again, choose Update your Kindle, sit back and let the machine do the work. It could take several minutes. Then, bingo, you’ll be all set, and you should see the new font.

5. Keep the Zipped file handy, or at least its contents, since it also contains files that uninstall your modification, in case you don’t like it.

6. Keep in mind that Amazon officially doesn’t like you to fiddle around with your Kindle, and that there is always the risk of introducing instabilities or otherwise damaging your system.
