Cassandra Clare

There is no doubt authors are popular. There are fan sites dedicated to them and many have hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of Twitter followers.

But how many can say they have their own trading card?

Leaf Trading Cards announced the release of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones trading cards to coincide with the release of the movie this summer. The Mortal Instruments is a six-book series by Cassandra Clare, which will be developed into a couple of movies.

One of the autographed cards in the set will feature Clare, while the white space on the card will feature her signature.

Autograph cards are big hits in boxes of cards, and to include Clare’s alongside those of actors Lily Collins, CCH Pounder and Jonathan Rhys-Meyer shows how much of a reach she has in the demographic.

Clare is not the first author to have trading cards. Popular author Neil Gaiman has at least three trading cards: one from a 1999 Babylon 5 product and two from the 2011 Comic Book Legal Defense Fund Liberty cards. One of those cards is an autograph. Other signers in that set include Robert Kirkman (“The Walking Dead”) and Gail Simone (“Birds of Prey”).

Who knows? As entertainment trading cards become more popular, authors may get more attention in areas they haven’t reached before.
