images.jpegThe NY Times is reporting that ebook sales of John Grisham’s new book The Confession were about one-third of week-one hardcover sales, or about 70,000.

Hardcover sales of the book are lower than that of his previous book, The Associate: 160,000 vs. 223,000, and ebook sales pushed the total for the new book ahead of the old.

“The e-book sales are astonishing,” said Mr. Grisham in an interview. “Would anybody have thought that a year ago? The future has arrived, and we’re looking at it.”

According to the article, Grisham has opposed ebooks, feeling that they would hurt his sales at independent bookstores, but relented after receiving numerous fan complaints.

Amazon says that The Confession prompted more hardcover pre-orders than any of Grisham’s previous books, but the Kindle edition still outsold the hardcover during the first week.
