Evil Genius Dave Slusher once worked for a DRM company. Lots of people dream of big bucks in DRM, but Dave worries about “split culture.” He sees a chance for the technorati to enjoy Victorian classics and other works in the public domain–part of “open” culture. But at the same time, he fears that DRM will lead to “closed” culture, with less access to the writings of the modern greats such as Philip Roth. Check out Dave’s text post and a related audio.

OpenReader and TeleRead, anyone? OpenReader would standardize e-book formats and DRM (for publishers insisting on it!) and let you own e-books for real. TeleRead, dating back to the early ’90s, proposes a well-stocked national digital library system with provisions for compensating copyright holders.
