I was sitting down to do a review of my new Kindle and then I came across Julie’s review in the Gadgeteer today. To be honest, she has covered the Kindle just as well as I could and is about as comprehensive as one could want. After her work, no need of anything from me.
However, I will say that I am rather pleased with the “Special Offers” version of the Kindle. This is the first time I’ve had such a thing. The special offers “screen savers” have been rather tasteful, so far – the one for headphone discounts was actually rather pretty. The only time you see any ads in the device, aside from the screensaver, is when you are on the home page and the ad just takes up a small banner at the bottom. Most of the time I don’t notice it at all and, of course, I only go to the home page when I want to change books. By the way, I’ve already saved $15 by taking Amazon up on some of ebook specials they offered, so eventually the machine might pay for itself. It even got me to thinking of changing my order for the Kindle Touch to the Special Offer unit, but I decided that I don’t want to disturb my place in the queue – which should be pretty early.
