I’ve been a fan of Scribd since they started with ebook subscriptions last year. Even though I’ve also been impressed with Kindle Unlimited, Scribd remains my subscription service of choice for now.
They recently updated both their Android and iOS apps with two-columns in landscape (long overdue!), and the apps now mimic the website redesign with new discoverability options. (And my library continues to grow–like I needed to discover more books!)
While Scribd is not the best option if you like to read on an eInk device, it’s pretty darned good if you don’t mind reading on a phone or tablet. I’ve used my Nook HD, iPad and my phone (currently an HTC One M8, formerly an iPhone 4S) to read books in the service, and I’ve had few complaints.
But don’t take my word for it. Try it yourself. They offer a standard 30 day free trial, but, for TeleRead readers, Scribd gave me a link to a 3 month free trial. Not a bad deal.
Enjoy some free reading!
Update: We had a good run, but the code has expired.
One question about Scribd. Do you need to be connected to the net to read? My tablet’s wifi is a bit flaky and runs down the battery faster than I’d like, so I usually run it in airplane mode.
A book is downloaded to your device in iOS and Android, but I don’t think the more recent Windows Phone reader allows off-line reading.
Super deal! Thanks Juli!
Oh, and I even read Scribd on my Kindle and laptop. Along with on my iPhone.
what about the iPad? How do I download and read off line?
@Penny, yes, you can download and read offline on the iPad. When you open a book for the first time, you’ll see an option to download near the bottom of the screen.
i only got a 2 month free trial with your code :((
How do I download a scribd book onto Nook? I have the Nook app, and from there a book will show up on my Nook reader, which I love, but I can’t figure out how to get the book from my scribd library into the Nook librarhy.
@Penny, you can’t get the Scribd books into your Nook reader. You can only read the books in the Scribd app.
hello,
they asked me for credit card information and i have no credit card to use, can you help please?
@leen, sorry, but you must have a credit card to sign up for the service. They won’t charge your card until your trial is up, but you need to have one on file.
This is amazing, man! Thank you! I just wanted to read a single document and had already used up my free one month trial. Didn’t find it worth it to pay 8.99 for 5 minutes of reading.
I owe ya one! 🙂
Code for 3 mo free trial still worked on 2/28/15. Thanks!
I own a windows 8.1 tablet and windows phone. will scribed work to download for off line reading to these devices?
@lplarry, as I recall, no, there is no offline reading mode for Windows devices.
Free three month code still works 4/18/15
What if you just want to try the free trial to get a taste of scribd and end up disliking the app? If you still don’t like it after the trial, do you HAVE to pay and keep?
@Sarah, no, you don’t have to continue it beyond the free trial.
Anyway, can you please tell me the promo code?
What about my promo code?
@Sarah, click on the link, and the promo code will be applied automatically, as long as you aren’t an existing member.
Does the promo code still work
@sue, as far as I know, it still does. Recent comments have indicated it’s still good.
what’s the promo code?Does it still work??
the link doesnt work, it takes me to the website but whenever i click redeem it says invalid promo code. It does not work, has it expired
I just tested it, and it seems to work, although I’m already a member, so it doesn’t apply to me.
It says the code is invalid. I’ve downloaded the app only but have not set up an account, so I believe I am a new user. May 24, 2015.
Sarah, thanks for the heads-up. I tried the link on a device without Scribd on it, even via browser cookies. No luck even though the promo code showed. My own hunch is that the deal has in fact expired. Sorry. If that’s the case, maybe Juli can check in with her Scribd contact and get it extended period
David
Promo code is showing “Invalid Promo Code” for me as well.
Will be tinkering with it today in other browsers. But I did see that if I go into an account, there was a linked page called “Read For Free New”
Inside that page I found this link and it seemed to work for a free two month subscription: https://www.scribd.com/g/4nezji
I plan to use that if changing browser or device doesn’t allow me to use the teleread promo.
Thank you Juli Monroe for the article and the promo code. Scribd has been one of the major highlights of my year. Especially now that there are audiobooks. I was in heaven when it was just tons of ebooks, but now that there are great audiobooks I can listen to them while I work during the day, and then at night, read with my eyes.
Cheers!
This link does not work as of today
