  1. His premises seem to be a bit out of whack. Apart from the dubious claim that the death penalty deters murderers (I’d love to see those studies, though), he also assumes that the goal of reducing the amount of murders is to save lives. It is not; governments forbid murder because they want to reduce unrest. The benefit of this is probably also measurable in monetary terms, but it is a different metric.
