vertical Within the last couple of weeks, Bookshelf author Zachary Bedell—busy with the process of packing up to move—nonetheless found time to put a new version of his $9.99 Bookshelf software up on the App Store. This is BookshelfLT, an ad-supported “lite” version of the iPhone Mobipocket-format reading app.

BookshelfLT is free to download, with no expiration date. It is limited to containing up to ten books at a time, and it displays an ad bar at all times—in the catalog screen, and in the reading screen. It is always at the top of the screen, whether reading orientation is horizontal or vertical.

horizontal Although the ad bar is slightly distracting and does make the iPhone’s already small reading area slightly smaller, it does not cause Bookshelf to work any less well. Since the ad bar is a uniform thickness, it obscures more text in landscape than in portrait mode.

The ad bar is annoying, but that is kind of the point of it—to annoy people enough to spend the $9.99 to upgrade to the ad-free version. Apart from that, and the ten-book limit, it functions the same as the “normal” Bookshelf in all respects. (In fact, it does not suffer from a couple of bugs I’ve found in the “real” Bookshelf—a lengthy delay in opening the Download screen, and an occasional failure to page between chunks until the space has been tapped several times.)

In and of itself, the application will be more than good enough for people who just want to try out Bookshelf (or e-reading in general), or people who are too cheap to pay for the real thing.
