image FBReader now lets you search for public domain books within the program. For months, I’d asked FBR to do that. Congratulations!

At the same time, FBReader’s library integration is far, far harder for e-book novices to enjoy than with iPhone-oriented Stanza. Looking up titles is different from being able to browse through lists. Ideally that wrinkle will come next.

imageDuring a quick test spin of the new FBReader, I also noticed that the Feedbooks’ libarary, as used via FBR, is less comprehensive than with Stanza.

Still, the look-up feature is a nice start, and I hope that the people at One Laptop Per Child will notice and seriously think about child-optimizing FBReader for use on the XO-1 and successors.

For that matter, maybe Stanza itself could be a candidate for the OLPC machines.

  1. Intel’s Classmate PCs appear to have FBReader pre-installed. Their software stack is less innovative than that on OLPC, but not necessarily less effective.

FBReader can also use FeedBook’s Kindle Download Guide, which includes lists. The downloaded files probably don’t end up in FBReader’s new “standard” download directory though.
