scanner.jpgAn article in The Independent profiles Safig, one of the few Europen firms to digitize books uning both automatic and human page turners. Safig started digitizing books in 2000 for local libraries and now has about 80 people in France and 400 people in outsourced operations in Mauritius and Madagascar. “This is a bit like a factory. We don’t make cars, but there’s a strong parallel,” [Project Leader Christophe] Danna said. Safig is paid per page, regardless of whether it is scanning a bodice-ripping classic or “Belgian Legislation on Professional Unions”, a yellowing tome awaiting digitization here.
