I got the following email from reader Jean K. She says:

I was shopping bn.com this morning. Bought a book and got taken to this screen. Note the link “Start reading on the BN Reader for iPad.”

Clicking the link got me nowhere, but copying the link got me this:

bnereaderipad://logon

Which either means nothing, or that they actually are working on a dedicated iPad reader. (I have to admit, my excitement for such a thing was beginning to wane).

Nice catch, and let’s all keep our eyes open.

As part of the our email correspondence Jean said the following. How many of you feel the same way? Is Amazon making a mistake here?

I really don’t want to buy Kindle stuff now that they’re tracking and publishing what people highlight. I’ve said it before… I’ll buy stuff from Amazon, but there’s something that creeps me out about their ability to get inside my head via Kindle content.

  1. Hmm. “bnereaderipad://” does fit the pattern of using a distinct URI for each app that needs to be called from Mobile Safari.

If they’re going live on their site with it, they must have a reason to expect the app to be approved soon.

Will be interesting to see if it opens Fictionwise/eReader.com titles.

  2. Actually I’m really happy about the quote/underline sync’ing with the Kindle. The fact I can capture my notes and highlights on my Kindle or on a PC (especially on a PC) really adds a lot of value to the “reading in the cloud” nature of the Kindle experience.

  3. The sharing of highlighted pasages is only for those who choose the option to share.

If it creeps you put don’t enable this feature. But don’t complain about it and make it sound as if it some invasive feature
