Cory Doctorow on fear of piracy

Will science fiction writers repeat the mistake of the recording studios and systematically go after online “pirates”–their fans? The Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, says Cory Doctorow, is already “freaked out.” “Why an organization devoted to helping sf writers in a world of declining sf readership should undertake to convince people not to read sf books, however acquired, is beyond me,” he says. Of course the same logic could apply to serious reading in general. Writers and publishers should worry less about piracy and more about Problem #1–the demand or lack of demand for their wares.
